Iiiii am so excited for Mysterium! There are going to be tons of Myst fans there this year, it’s themed around Riven (my favorite), and we’re going to go to Cyan and get Obduction teasers.

I’m going to have some shiny things for sale there to defray the cost of my room/plane ticket—I think Cyan is going to set up a small “shop” during the visit, plus I’ll have them with me the rest of the time. I’ll post details on what I’m bringing later this week ^_^

(And for those who I won’t see at Mysterium, I’ll be posting whatever’s left in my Etsy shop when I get back.)

As Capella put it, "Ever thought "Myst is awesome, and I'd like to play in that universe, only at a table with my friends and some dice?" Well, now you can." Go look at the Unwritten Myst RPG Kickstarter!

I'm making the brass pendants for the Guild Captain 2 reward level! And this is part of my project to generally make Myst/Riven/Uru/etc stuff for fans :) I know it's been a while since I posted about the Riven crest necklaces, but they are *absolutely* still in the works, and basically all of the research I've done for this project applies for the crest pendants too. When I'm done fulfilling the Kickstarter rewards, I'll start stocking both these and the Riven crests in my Etsy shop.

What kind of research have I been doing? Well, to start with, I unpacked almost all of my jewelry tools in my new apartment (I didn't get accepted into the local makerspace, but I'm working with what I've got). I've finally cracked the code for using PNP Blue to transfer my computer designs to metal. AND, my friend who has access to a waterjet cutter is letting me call in a few favors and get stuff cut on the machine at cost. So that means I get to use thicker metal, in whatever size or shape I want. After some bumps along the way while learning how the machine works (it turns out the best way to get the shape from Inkscape to the waterjet involves a detour through Corel Draw), I've made a design where the necklace bail is integrated into the pendant, for a stronger design and a more streamlined build process. I've also come up with a bunch of workbench hacks for making multiple pendants at a time quickly. Since my main jewelry experience has been in making quirky, unique, one-of-a-kind stuff, this is a good skillset for me to branch into!

TLDR: I'm making shiny things now, and will make more shiny things in the future, support the Unwritten kickstarter! :D

So my partner and I are settling into the new place! Things are going well, but unpacking goes kind of slowly. The kitchen is the only room that's all unpacked. It's a little maddening to not have easy access to my tools. This month I'm investigating getting some workspace at the local makerspace and setting up a crafting area in the house as well.

The immediate next steps for the Riven project don't even require having a fully functioning workspace--I just need to locate and unpack my metal plates and clamps and brass discs so I can do more experiments with PNP Blue transfers. Still need to find the perfect temperature/pressure/time combination and make sure there are no tiny flaws in my design or in the output from the printer I use. Because getting the process tuned to produce flawless transfers of my designs to metal is important to me! So at a minimum, that's what I want to work on this month, hopefully more if I can get into the makerspace.

I found out a couple of months ago that I'd be moving. After a whirlwind of apartment-hunting and packing, the final move date is approaching (a week from now). I'm going to be moving to an apartment with a different kind of workspace--one that's in my living room instead of a basement! I'm still figuring out what this means for my fannish projects and my metalsmithing in general. I may need to start doing some of the work at the local maker-space (for fire safety/noise reasons), but I believe I'll still be able to make the crests one way or another. It's very important for me to bring them into the world, and I thank everyone who's been waiting so patiently so far!

Hi to new followers/watchers! :)

I was pretty sick for about a week in November. I got better, but have since been struggling with a couple of setbacks--first, my leather supplier ran out of the antique brown leather. I've found a different source for black, undyed, or solid brown leather in the same size, and I'm hoping that some people will like those options. (Which would you prefer?) Also, all of my careful calibrations for transferring the image to metal from November were invalidated. It turns out that the settings that worked perfectly for a single disc do not work at all for a batch of 9 (the batch size I'm hoping to have). So I'm back to trying various combinations of time/temperature/pressure (mostly focusing on providing enough pressure to the system--I bought two more big clamps from the hardware store that I hope will help).

I've had almost 40 people express interest in this project, which is gratifying and humbling and a little terrifying all at the same time! :o

The number of crests I'm shooting for means that ironing out all the kinks in my batch production process is essential to me being able to finish the project. And my hope is that I'll be able to reuse the process to etch all sorts of awesome Myst things next year!

The good news is that I have almost a week and a half off of work for the holidays, and I forsee lots of time to really dig in and work on this project. Finally! Thanks for your patience and cheering on so far :)
